Over the years, I’ve learned many lessons about the power of words—but sometimes, life has a way of reminding us again. Not because we’ve never known the truth, but because we forget to live it. We know words matter. We’ve heard it before. But do we truly understand the weight they carry?

This past weekend, I was gently—though not comfortably—reminded of this truth.

Sunday arrived with a strange heaviness. I felt emotionally off-balance, agitated by something I couldn’t quite name. I did everything I could to shake it, but the feeling lingered like a stubborn shadow. By Monday morning, I was determined to uncover the root of it.

So I paused. I backtracked my thoughts and conversations, looking for the moment where fear might have slipped through the cracks. And then it hit me.

On Saturday, I’d bumped into an old friend. In a quick exchange, she said, “Oh, it must be scary, this new endeavour of yours.” Without much thought—and wanting to keep the conversation light—I replied, “Yes, a little scary.” But the truth is, that wasn’t what I believed. I am not scared. I am challenged, yes. Stretched? Absolutely. But I am confident in the path I’m walking—confident because I know it’s God’s plan for me.

And yet, in that fleeting moment, I didn’t speak from that place of faith. I agreed with fear. I spoke it—even though I didn’t mean it. And that small agreement opened the door to a heaviness I carried all through Sunday.

It may seem like a minor thing, but words are never just words. They hold power. They shape the atmosphere around us and the thoughts within us. They can build us up or tear us down. And when spoken in faith—or in fear—they set a direction for our inner world to follow.

When I speak words like, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13), or “Be strong and of good courage… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9), something shifts in me. These words create courage in me. They remind me of who I am. They align my heart with faith, not fear.

This experience reminded me to be intentional with my words—especially when I’m tired, uncertain, or just trying to keep a conversation polite. Those are the very moments when I must anchor myself in truth. Because our words aren’t just a reflection of what we think; they’re often the architects of what we feel and believe.

So let me ask you: What are you speaking over your life today?

Are your words building your courage, or subtly feeding your fears?

Let’s be people who speak life—who choose faith even in casual conversations. Let’s remind ourselves daily that our words matter. Because they do.

And next time fear knocks, we’ll know exactly what to say.
